Why believe in God when you can't prove He exists

I'm doing a report, for English. And I was wondering if you could write me back and tell me why you believe in God. When you started believing in him and why. And how you can believe in something that you can't prove exist...or can you? I'm not a believer in God... but I recently went to church, and interviewed someone else, what they said changed what I think, but I still don't see how you can believe so strongly in something you don't know for sure exists. Thank you for your time, and if you don't read this or reply before Wednesday (May 12th) it's ok, you don't have to, I'm sure you're a busy person. Thank you for your time again. Bye

My response is in Green:

Thanks for writing, I will be glad to tell you why I believe in God. You asked why I would believe in something I can't prove, well I think I can prove Him. However, I am not sure you will agree, it is kind of a personal thing. You see, I grew up in a Christian home and believed in God right from the start, but at that time I did not really know Him, it was just my parents influence. Then I went into the Marine Corps at the end of Vietnam and I no longer had my parents looking over my shoulder so I put God aside and did anything and everything I wanted to do. Much of it was pretty bad.

After getting out of the Marines I became a Police Officer and believe me I have seen it all. I have seen people killed over a pork chop, or because two parents were fighting over who would get the kids, etc... I saw so much evil that I stopped believing in almost anything. I no longer even cared if I lived or died, what difference did it make. My first marriage went down the toilet and I was all alone. Then I met my present wife. She did not know God either but she was searching. What I mean by that is that she knew there was a being out there that could help her but she did not understand or know who He was. Anyway she talked me into going back to church. She gave her life to Jesus Christ and I saw such a difference in her that I rededicated my life to Him too. My wife had had two abortions before we met and she was racked with guilt over them. They say it is a woman's choice, what they don't tell you is how that choice effects the women. Anyway, once she asked God to forgive her she became a changed person. She now tries to help other woman get through the hurt, before she just drank and partied to forget the hurt. He also changed me, I now care very much whether I live or die. I have something to live for now.

I also have a very good friend who was an alcoholic for 20 years. He tried everything to stop, He went to AA, rehab (three times) hypnosis, acupuncture, you name it and nothing worked. The longest he ever went without a drink was two months. Then he gave his life to Christ and now for well over a year he has had no desire to have a drink. He smiles now and is a nice person where before he almost never smiled and was not really a nice person.

You see I have seen God and I have seen God work. To me that is proof enough that He is who He says He is.

Now I have a question for you. If there is no God, where did we come from? You see people believe in the big bang, where two gases came together and bang here I am writing you on a computer. To me that takes much more faith than believing in God. Every time I walk outside and see nature I KNOW that it could not have happened by chance. They teach that evolution happened, but they can't prove it! Yet people laugh at us Christians who say we believe in God, go figure.

Here is something else to think about. How do you explain the Bible? If you have never thought about it you owe it to yourself to take a look. There are predictions in it that were made over 2,000 years ago that are just now coming true. Many many things have been proved correct that are in the Bible. Just look at the book its self, what other book has sold as many copies and been around as long? No others! Why? I believe because God has a hand in it. Here is one more question for you. Did you know that Christ, Jesus and God are curse words in almost every known language? How do you explain that? Buddha, nor any other of the 'other' god's names are curse words, but those are. If you think about it I think you will see that there has to be a reason. I believe that reason is Satan, he hates God and even His name.

Well anyway, I hope that gave you the idea of why I believe. Please feel free to write back, I love to talk about my faith. Take care and good luck on your report.
