What do you think about pleading the blood of Jesus over things?

Hi Ralph,

Ive visted many churches throughout the UK, USA and Canada...and one phrase seems to be eveident in all and that is 'Plead the blood of Jesus..or 'I cover you with Jesus's blood' !

The Church I now attend does not agree with this statement as they say there is no bible scriptures to back this... i.e Jesus for one never did say anything of this effect.. I personally believe in the power of these words..but what do you think?

My response is in Green:

I too have heard that said often in many different churches. I don't put any stock in it. There are a couple of reasons, none of which as anything to do with whether Jesus used the words or not. What bothers me about the saying is this, most people use it as a mantra, magic words, or superstitious words. They may not mean to be using it that way, but that is how they in fact do use it.

Much like people pray either the Lord's prayer or Psalm 23 when they are in physical danger. Now, I think it is good to pray God's word back to Him, but there is nothing magical or protective in those two things. Pleading the blood is the same, what does it mean?

First let me address what Jesus blood does cover. It covers our sins and it covers them from God the Father, no one else. His blood does not protect us from anything, other than the punishment we deserve from God the Father.

Acts 20:28 "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood."

Hebrews 9:11-14 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; [12] and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. [13] For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, [14] how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

So yes Jesus' blood is wonderful, it is powerful and it saves us from our sins, but nowhere does the Bible say it will save us from anything else. We can plead the blood over our car, or house, or our enemies, whatever, but the only thing it will save us from is the wrath of God. So what happens is that people plead the blood over all kinds of things like a talisman, because they somehow think it will protect them or stop evil. Catholics make the sign of the cross for exactly the same reason and with just as much effect; none.

The ONLY time I think that pleading the blood of Jesus would do any good at all is if Satan is throwing your past (forgiven) sins back in your face, we can then plead the blood of Jesus because it is what has covered our sins for us. There is no longer any condemnation for those sins which have been covered by Jesus' blood.
