Let's face it, the world today is a very scary place. We have wars going on in a dozen places and threatening to go on in many others. The economic situation worldwide is a mess. Every day we hear of devastating storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis occurring throughout the world.
Here is the United States we have situations of political disarray, to put it mildly. Both political parties are blaming the other for the chaos and the corruption that is plaguing the nation. Banks and financial institutions are failing at an unprecedented rate, unemployment is at an all time high, people are losing their homes and their financial security. Many are perplexed and don't know with whom to place their confidence. Who can get us out of this mess?
Rather than continuing to place our confidence in Man, we might better heed the words that Moses told the people of Israel when they were standing between the Red Sea and the approaching Egyptians: "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today." (Exodus 14:10).
We must place out faith in the Lord and Him only. Whatever will occur, He already knows and is using it for his own purpose. Instead of letting the news control our emotions, the Bible declares:
God is our refuge and strength,
An ever present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way, And the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, Though its waters roar and foam And the mountains quake with their surging. (Psalm 46:1-3).
Psalm 23 tells us "I will fear no evil." Who can stand against us when we have the LORD God on our side? Not only can God protect us from danger, but he can rescue us from the nagging fear of what might happen to us. That kind of anxiety creates spiritual chaos and robs us of joy and peace.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Have no fear of sudden disaster
Or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked. (Proverbs 3:24-25).
Granted that the world is a scary place, but we who have received Christ as our Savior are sealed by the Holy Spirit and held for Christ till the day He redeems us as His own. We are not promised an easy or carefree life, as many preachers promise today, but we are promised a glorious eternity with our Lord. As we recall the words, "These were the best of times and they were the worst of times," let us recall that we have been set aside for Christ. We are here to do the work to which He has entrusted us.
Today many in the world are troubled by the things which we see going on around us. Many do not have any assurance at all. They have no hope. We, however, have been given the Good News to share with them.
It is for a time like this that we have been called: "But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren" (Luke 22:3132). We may be the only hope that they have. Let us pray the Holy Spirit strengthen and enable us so that He may deliver them.
We have not been given a spirit of fear. Let us encourage each other as we strive to bring in the harvest. Let us thank Him for the confidence which He has guaranteed us. Without faith it is impossible to please the Lord!
