The Idea of going to Hell

One reason why I don't believe in God is because of the idea of going to hell. I was raised Catholic and was taught by nuns in a Catholic high school. I was led to believe that if you were not a baptized Catholic and/or you die with a mortal sin on your soul, you would go to hell for eternity. That means that 99.9 % of the human race would go to hell for eternity. Even the people that I know who do go to church on a somewhat regular basis, still have other sins on their soul... Anyway, my point is that supposedly back in the beginning, God created the Universe and mankind because He wanted someone to share his glory with. He wanted some company up there in heaven. God could see the past, present and the Future, so He would have known that even though He would eventually have millions of people with Him in heaven, sharing in His glory, He would also have Trillions or Quadrillions of people suffering in hell for eternity.

I think that it is VERY selfish of Him to do that. Just so He can have some company in heaven, He is going to make all the rest of Humanity suffer in Hell for eternity. What an *%$@#@!!!!!!!!!!!! He doesn't seem very nice to me. Sound like a greedy, selfish Son-of-a-*&% !!!!!!!!!

It would be a lot better for HIM to suffer by being lonely and not creating the Human race. (lonliness is just a tiny bit of suffering compared to us suffering in hell). I predict that you are going to say something like "God gave us a choice and we could have gone to heaven if we wanted to." That is not totally true. What about a person who dies at the age of 3 or 4 and was never baptized. It's not their fault, they don't even know what a god is yet. That person never had a chance. Or someone who grew up in a tribe in Africa and never heard of Christianity. They would go to Hell also (supposedly) because they were never baptized and did not love Jesus, even though they had NEVER HEARD OF HIM.

It just seems very hard to believe

My response is in Green:

Thanks for writing to me. First let me say that I am not a Catholic and I don't believe in what you were told as a child. No one can show you in the Bible that you have to be a baptized member of any church to go to heaven, it is not true. All that a person has to do is believe that Jesus Christ was God that He came to earth as a human being and died for our sins and rose again and will now forgive you if you ask. Then just ask Him to forgive you and you are on your way to heaven. Period......

If a person does not accept the free gift of salvation by asking Jesus to forgive them then yes they will go to hell, but I believe there are exceptions to even that. For instance if a person has never heard of Jesus they will not be judged on that. As you said if a child dies at the age of 3 or 4 I believe God's grace covers them, because they could not make a choice. The same goes for the person who has never heard of Jesus. Now that does not get them off scott free, God has placed in our hearts the knowledge of right and wrong, so even if a person does not know who Jesus is they know that there is right and there is wrong and I believe they know that there is a being greater than themselves. They may not know who He is but if they try to honor Him, I believe God will accept that. Part of this is I believe that even though they may never know Jesus by name, the Holy Spirit is still able to guide them to Him. Look at the people in the old Testament, like Abraham, he did not know who Jesus was, but yet he honored God and the New Testament says he was saved because of it. So yes I will say God has given us a choice.

(Mark 16:16 NIV) Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

(Romans 1:18-20 NIV) The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, {19} since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. {20} For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Do you understand what hell is? It is the total separation from God. So people who say 'there is no God and even if there is I think He is hateful I would rather go to hell then serve Him,' they will get their wish.

I dislike the Catholic church for some of the very reasons that you mentioned. The ONLY way to get to heaven is by having a personal relationship with Christ and the ONLY way you get one is by believing in Him and asking Him to forgive you. Yet the Catholic church does not teach that, they teach instead that the church saves you. That is a lie!!!

So do yourself a favor and read the Bible and decide for yourself what is true. Don't let the Catholic church or me or anyone else think for you and cause you to miss what God has for you. That is another thing about the Catholic church I dislike, they don't tell people to read God's word, in fact they tell people not to bother because you can't understand it without their help. Again that is a lie!!! Don't take my word for it, find out for yourself.

You said God is a jerk for creating us and allowing so much pain. The pain is caused by us and our sinful nature. He could have created us so that we could not sin, but then we would have been no more than slaves. He allowed Adam and Eve to sin, because if He had not they would not have been truly free. His holy nature demands death for sin, and He cannot change who He is. If that were the end of the story you would be right about Him being a jerk, but it is not the end. He paid the death sentence for us. It is like you killing someone and the judge sentencing you to death. The very night you are to die, the judge comes to your cell on death row and unlocks the door. He tells you that he can't change the law or the sentence but if you will just ask him to he will come in and take your place. Now if you refuse to ask, who is the jerk the judge or you? It really is that simple.

Oh one last point, I don't believe God was lonely. I believe He created us to show us His love, but we perverted it. Yes I believe He knew that before He created us that many people would chose to reject Him, but He also knew that many would accept His gift too. So why should everyone suffer for what the bad ones do? Can you honestly tell me that you would rather not to have ever been born than to have to decide to follow God or not? Or are you telling me since there is pain in your life you wish your parents had aborted you before you were born? I seriously doubt either of those is true.
