I read your page on contemplating suicide which I am considering doing, but I am not religious but very depressed due to the fact that I am in debt by £0000's and have failed my courses twice so I came to the conclusion about 6 months ago.
LIFE what's the point your born to die so I might as well get it over with I think its so pointless I just cant see what's so great about it, fair enough I'm only 19/male/England but I don't think it is going to change much in the next 50 or so years. So I am stuck and have no idea of what to do next
My response is in Green:
Well you are right about a few things. Without God there is no purpose to life. You are young to realize that, but you are totally right. We were all created to have a relationship with God and until we do life has no purpose at all. People search all their lives for purpose and never find it. One of the reasons you are thinking of suicide is because you are in debt, but there are people who have more money they they can spend and they too are thinking about suicide because their life has no meaning either. Look at the celebrities, they jump in and out of bed, they use drugs, they buy everything they think they want, and yet they don't have a clue what life is really all about. That is why so many of them die young from over doses or suicide.
You already know the bad news, but do you really under stand the good news? Like I said we were all created to have a relationship with God. He loves us and wants us to know Him and know His purpose for our lives. You can look all around you and see His hand, yet when you are depressed and despondent you can look and look and never see what is right before you.
Lets start at the beginning. We are all born sinners, meaning that we have all done wrong things. Sin or wrong things are all offenses against God. God is holy and can't stand our sin. His holy nature demands that we die: (Ezekiel 18:4 NIV) For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son--both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
Yet God loves us and wants to help us. His holy nature keeps Him from just forgetting about our sins, they have to be paid for and the punishment is always death. (Spiritual death, or in other words separation from God and His mercy.) (Romans 5:8 NIV) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God did something that would both appease His justice and allow us to be forgiven. He sent His one and only Son to die in our place. And then He raised Him back to life on the third day. By raising Him back to life God proved He is more powerful then death. We can know that if we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior that even if our body dies we will still live when He resurrects us with new bodies. Bodies that won't have any diseases or pains or troubles like we do now.
If we refuse to accept this free gift of forgiveness then we are destined to die and go to hell for eternity to pay for our own sins. So you might be asking how does a person accept this salvation: (Romans 10:9 NIV) That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Confessing that Jesus is Lord means confessing that we are sinners and that we realize we are under a death sentence and there is nothing we can do about it. And confessing that we believe that God loves us and will forgive us if we ask Him to. We must also believe that He did indeed raise Jesus from the dead. Then if we ask He will forgive us and we have eternal life at that point. Jesus said: (John 5:24 NIV) "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life."
Now if you ask Jesus to forgive you that does not mean that instantly all your troubles will disappear but it means that the most important problem you have will instantly disappear and that is the death sentence that you feel in your life. Your life will start to have meaning and you will be able to face what life confronts you with because God will help you. Like I said if you refuse God's gift then your life will never make any sense and after you die you will be locked eternally in a place of torment without any hope of it changing.
Most people do not want to believe in God because they want to run their own life and if they believe in God then they will have to answer to Him. Well they will one day answer to Him whether they believe in Him or not. Just because a person does not believe something does not make that something untrue. Secondly what is wrong with God running your life; it's not like you have done such a good job up to this point. I don't mean you in particular I mean you as in all of us.
So if you truly want a life with purpose and meaning get to know God. But remember no matter how bad your life seems now it is nothing compared to what eternity in torment would be like and that is exactly what you will get if you kill yourself. God is certainly worth checking out before you do something that can't be undone. There is no turning back after death if you find out that it was a mistake.
You said you are not a religious person, that is fine, you don't need to be. All you need to do is have a personal relationship with God. The God of the universe loves you, you should at least see what that could mean to your life. I hope you will.
