Escape from Slavery

This is such a powerful book. Once you start reading it, it is hard to put down. It is the story of a seven year old Dinka boy who is captured in a raid by Muslim raider and spends the next 10 years in slavery in Sudan. It is hard to read at times because of the great suffering and horrors this young man saw. Yet it is full of hope as he talks about his family upbringing that helped him survive. His father and mother had told him that he would never be alone, God would always be with him. He leaned on God and God helped him.

Shortly after he learned Arabic, he asked his slave master why no one loved him or showed compassion for him, why he had to sleep with the animals. The slave master replied that he too was an animal. He was a slave from 1986 to 1996, but many more slaves are still being abused in Sudan even today.
