This was a good book, yet a little bit of a disappointment for me. The book is about a Marine unit in Iraq and specifically Lieutenant Colonel Kopelman, who finds a puppy and falls in love with it in the middle of a horrific war.
What I liked about the book was how it showed the hard bitten combat veteran Marines' kinder, gentler side. These young men were trained to kill without remorse, without even much thought because if you have to stop and think you will be the one killed. Yet when they find this puppy they melt under his gaze. It is a very heart warming story. What I didn't care for was the way the book was written; much like a diary, with thoughts just kind of put down on paper, not really in story form. It was good, but I just don't care for this style.
