BadgeSteven J. Underwood (Master Patrol Officer)
Des Moines, Washington
By A Concerned citizen, Kent, Washington
Today (March 7, 2001) the City of Des Moines, Washington Lost it's first Officer in the line of duty. Officer Steven J. Underwood is survived by his wife and 2 year old son. He was a 6 year veteran of Des Moines Police force. As a member of the local community it saddens my heart to see one of our Finest lose their life in a senseless murder. Officer Underwood shall not be forgotten.

Associated Press... It was the first Des Moines policeman to be killed in the line of duty. Patrolman Steven J. Underwood, 33, was a six-year veteran of the Des Moines police force. He saw four suspicious men walking on Pacific Highway at 1:20 a.m. and radioed his dispatcher for back-up, saying he was stopping the group because he recognized one of them as a person wanted on a felony arrest warrant.

By the time a police sergeant arrived, he found him with critical gunshot wounds. The 33-year-old officer died at Harborview Medical Center at 4:40 a.m.
